What I’m Reading

February 28, 2015
It’s been too long since I’ve updated my reading list. Quite a bit has changed in my life due in large part to my readings over the last year and a half. I’m excited to share what I’m reading now. 🙂

I’ve just finished When the Heart Waits by Sue Monk Kidd and can’t wait to start it again and do the questions at the end of the book. Up next is Discernment by Henri Nouwen!

Also, on my shelf over the last few months:
The Story of a Soul St. Therese of Lisieux
The Way of Trust and Love by Jacques Phillipe
True Devotion to Mary: Preparation for Total Consecration by St. Louis de Montefort
No Man is An Island by Thomas Merton
Bel Canto Ann Patchett
This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett
Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett (I had the great fortune to see Ms. Patchett in Tulsa and visit Parnassus Bookstore in Nashville)
Maurice & Therese: The Story of Love by Patrick Ahern
God’s Fool: The Life and Times of Francis of Assisi by Julien Green

Wisdom of the Benedictine Elders
Another great book moving me a little closer to my decision to become an oblate. The Benedictine order seems to be a perfect balance of work and prayer. A way to live our lives with balance in areas of the physical, mental, spiritual.

Ten Poems to Change Your Life by Roger Housden
The title did not disappoint! The opening lines of the poem, “The Journey” by Mary Oliver packed such a punch that I read them over and over before I continued reading the rest of the poem.

Shirt of Flame: A Year with Saint Therese of Lisieux by Heather King
Another AMAZING book by Ms. King! Could not put this one down until I had soaked up every last word!

Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way by Shauna Niequist
This book brings me right to the heart of the challenges that we all face: loneliness, discontentment, disappointment, fatigue. But through all that bitterness comes the sweetness of life. Ms. Niequist has that conversational quality to her writing that makes me want to have another cup of tea and enjoy another chapter. 🙂

Redeemed by Heather King is my new favorite book. I may have to track this woman down and force her to talk to me! 🙂

And I’m almost done re-reading Wild Cheryl Strayed.

While at the monastery, I read two amazing books.

Thoughts Matter by Mary Margaret Funk
Tools Matter by Mary Margaret Funk

They are in a series, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one. When I get to Discernment Matters, Sister Barbara at St. Joseph Monastery has invited me to be part of her Lectio Divina classes. 🙂

A little about the author: Mary Margaret “Meg” Funk is a “[a] former Prioress and still a current member of Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove, Indiana, Funk directs the School of Lectio Divina at the adjacent Benedict Inn.” Source: Wikipedia, of course. 🙂

Right now, I’m reading Teresa of Avila: The Progress of a Soul by Cathleen Medwick. I’m starting Chapter 3 tonight and find myself more and more intrigued by the strength and vision of this woman.
